Three key benefits for reading aloud to preschoolers | Sparkhouse blog

No matter the time of year, there’s one thing that never goes out of style: books! Following along with your favorite character’s adventures can take you to new places—and even open your mind to different ideas than you’ve experienced before.

For our preschoolers, reading aloud and sharing stories offers several benefits to their development and even, future reading ability. For preschool Sunday school leaders, reading aloud can be an easy way to engage your little ones and teach them important concepts.

On top of that, here are three other reasons why you need to be reading aloud to preschoolers:

It teaches them patience

For many of our toddlers and preschoolers, patience can be challenging to understand—why do we have to wait? There are a few different games and activities that you can do to ensure that they are learning this important life skill.

Among one of them? Reading aloud! Studies have shown that children who are read from birth through age five have less behavioral issues. Helping them learn how to sit quietly in a group while you share a story from start to finish teaches them the reward of listening and waiting for what’s to come.

Reading aloud helps with developing their language

Kids are always listening—and while you read aloud, it’s helping them understand new words and even learn things like pronunciation and how to use the words that they hear.

When they hear adults using sentence structures and following grammatical rules, both of which are found in kids’ books, it helps your toddlers and preschoolers build their skills in these areas. In fact, research has shown that kids who are read aloud to regularly as preschoolers have higher literacy rates and better vocabulary.

Preschoolers learn key values and their meaning

Teach faith to little ones is similar to teaching them a language—their literacy improves the earlier you start.

In fact, in the first three years, infants and toddlers begin acquiring the first of thousands of words they will use throughout their lives. Reading preschoolers books featuring faith concepts and values as preschoolers gives them a foundation that lasts a lifetime—and also speaks to the other two reasons why you should read aloud!
